Epsom Derby

The Epsom Derby is one of the leading flat racing events throughout the racing season. Unlike many racecourses, Epsom is unique as the racecourse is on public grounds. The Derby attracts huge crowds of around 100,000 people not only in the paid enclosures and hospitality areas but also in the free public area. This area enables people to pitch up in their cars to watch, with a multitude of entertainment, markets, fun fairs and screening areas to watch the racing and build up atmosphere.

Although the racecourse has its own audio system which covers the grandstand areas and main straight which is used for most of their race meetings throughout the year, the Epsom Derby is different.

  • Audio Systems - Additional audio systems were required further around the racecourse and inside the public area in the middle of the racecourse. This is for the purpose of race commentary and health and safety announcements.

  • Temporary Structures – There was also a requirement for sound systems in a number of the temporary structures that include corporate hospitality and media enclosures. This is also for race commentary and speeches/ announcements.

Soundbite’s Solution:

  • Precise Planning - Identified with the racecourse what areas of the site needed additional audio reinforcement.

  • Clever Cabling - Planned speaker cabling runs that avoided trip hazards to public, vehicles and horses!

  • Collaboration - Worked with other suppliers to make use of power supplies and planned power generation where required. Liaised with the racecourse technical team to link their racecourse audio feeds to our audio systems located around the racecourse.

  • Emergency Audio – We provided an emergency announcement microphone and feed from the event control office to override all onsite sound systems if required.

  • Event Coordination - Coordinated a team of technicians and suppliers to look after each area during the event.

What were the results?

The Epsom Derby is a large scale event requiring many suppliers to make it a success. Careful planning and coordination alongside the other suppliers ensures this event comes together seamlessly. Due to our familiarity with the event, the Derby organisers can focus on other areas, confidently leaving the audio to us – As far as they are concerned, it just happens!
